Report: Championship club drop out of race to sign Sheffield Wednesday target in boost for Danny Rohl

Sheffield Wednesday have been handed a boost in pursuit of one of their summer transfer targets.

Sheffield Wednesday already have a growing list of summer transfer targets, with the Owls seemingly closing in on their first arrival.

Free agent goalkeeper Ben Hamer looks set to arrive whilst long-standing Owls shot-stopper Cameron Dawson now looks set to leave.

Danny Rohl looks set to bolster his attacking ranks more than anything this summer with several forwards linked so far this summer.

Duncan McGuire and Mika Biereth are both back on Sheffield Wednesday’s radar following links in January, whilst Ovie Ejaria has been mentioned.

Rohl is also desperate to re-sign loan stars Ike Ugbo and Ian Poveda, both on permanent deals.

Another name linked with a potential summer move to S6 is Karamoko Dembele; the former Celtic wonderkid shone on loan for Blackpool last season and is wanted on loan at Sheffield Wednesday.

Sheffield Wednesday handed Karamoko Dembele boost

Dembele, 21, currently plays for Ligue 1 side Brest, who’ll be playing in the Champions League next season after finishing 3rd in the French top flight last season.

Last time round, Scottish winger Dembele was on loan at Blackpool; he scored eight goals, assisted 13 more, and claimed three Player of the Season awards at Bloomfield Road.

He’s garnered widespread interest this summer with links to the Premier League, as well as Sheffield Wednesday and Portsmouth in the Championship.

But an emerging report from The News says that Pompey will cool their interest, due to the volume of interest currently being shown.

Leeds United are also said to be interested in a potential loan deal for Dembele this summer.

Can Sheffield Wednesday win Karamoko Dembele race

Dembele’s next move seems vital. He’s has a stop-start few years after breaking onto the scene with Celtic at age 15, but his Blackpool showing has put him back on track.

Returning to Brest and playing in the Champions League may be too much of a step up after playing in League One with Blackpool.

But a loan move to the Championship, instead of a permanent switch to the Premier League, seems like it’d be better for his development, and better for Brest.

It’ll depend on what Brest may think is better; a top-end Championship club, or a more mid-table one where game-time might come with more of a guarantee.

Depending on who Leeds sign and sell this summer, they might be the better fit for Dembele if Brest want him playing higher up the standings.

But that’s not to rule out Sheffield Wednesday; their form under Rohl suggests that the Owls could be right up there next season, and with an already-thin first-team squad, Dembele could get as much game time as he wants.

Now with Portsmouth out of the race, it only serves to boost Sheffield Wednesday’s chances of a potential signing.
