Monchi ‘talks’ with Juventus hint Aston Villa had one very clear Douglas Luiz plan all along

The timeline of Douglas Luiz’s move to Juventus details that Aston Villa had a clear plan all along.

When the Premier League season ended 24 days ago, not many would have expected that Aston Villa would now be in the final stages of offloading Douglas Luiz.

The midfielder is on the verge of joining Juventus as part of a swap deal involving Weston McKennie and Samuel Iling-Junior plus cash.

While the transaction is understood to be a result of Villa’s PSR concerns, fresh updates suggest that the deal was in the pipeline for some time.

When Monchi started talking to Juventus about Douglas Luiz transfer

The deal has picked up pace over the past few days, with the details of when Monchi opened talks now explained.

Journalist Ryan Taylor detailed that talks started ‘around 10 days ago’ when Villa’s president of football operations first met with Juventus.

In his column for the Mirror, Taylor went on to explain that Monchi had learned of Juve’s desire to sign Luiz, with the Spaniard insisting that the Villans had to ‘move quickly’.

Due to PSR concerns, many clubs are moving frantically ahead of June 30th, reinforcing why the deal has developed at such an astounding speed.

Villa were aware of their financial situation long before the summer window, suggesting that the plan to offload Luiz could have materialised some time ago.

Luiz is Villa’s sacrifice to PSR

Aston Villa owner Nassef Sawiris recently shared his displeasure with the Premier League’s financial rules, sanctions that have ultimately caused Villa to have to part ways with Luiz.

While the Brazilian was stalling over a new contract, it wouldn’t have been expected that Emery would have been willing to bid farewell to the midfielder so soon into his tenure.

There aren’t many players as impactful at Villa as Luiz, who fits the manager’s system expertly in the middle of the park.

Due to PSR, Villa have their hands tied in the scenario of selling Luiz, in a deal that may well have been mapped out but seems rushed in terms of what the Midlands club will receive in return.

McKennie, Iling-Junior and €20m is what is believed to be a reasonable exchange for Luiz, whom the manager will now have a task to replace.
