Hungary promises not to block NATO's decisions on assistance to Ukraine. At the same time, the Alliance agreed not to involve Budapest in such support, according to Bloomberg.

Today, on June 12, a meeting took place between NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban regarding the future cooperation between Budapest and the Alliance. In particular, it concerned assistance to Ukraine.

Orban stated that Hungary's position on the war in Ukraine differs from that of most NATO countries. He promised that Budapest would not block aid to Ukraine. According to Orban, Hungary remains a "loyal" NATO member.

Stoltenberg, for his part, stated that NATO accepts the decision on “Hungary’s non-participation” in NATO's efforts regarding Ukraine.

The Secretary-General agreed to ensure that Hungary would not have to take part in the deepening of the Alliance's support for Ukraine.

Hungary's position on Ukraine

Hungary does not support Ukraine's accession to NATO and the EU. In addition, the Hungarian authorities make ambiguous statements about Russia's war against Ukraine. Budapest has not provided Ukraine with military assistance and, according to media reports, has banned the transit of weapons through the country.

Recently, Hungary blocked the Council of Europe's resolution on the Ukrainian peace formula because Russia's position was not taken into account.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has also stated that his country will reconsider its membership in NATO because of its assistance to Ukraine.
