'Set to miss': Journalist says £50m Man City star is ill, he will now miss England training

It has been reported that one Manchester City player will miss training for England due to illness.

Gareth Southgate will likely be distressed by the news, considering the Three Lions face Serbia on Sunday night.

Harry Maguire’s injury meant he was ruled out of Euro 2024 while there are concerns that Luke Shaw will miss England’s opener.

Anthony Gordon expressed that he was “worried” when John Stones went down with a knock during his nation’s 1-0 defeat to Iceland.

John Stones suffers fresh setback ahead of England vs Serbia

The £50 million man has come off an injury-riddled campaign but the hope remains that he can be fit to partake at Euro 2024.

However, journalist Craig Hope has revealed that Stones will miss England training due to suffering with illness.

With the European Championship set to kickstart on Sunday, only time will tell whether the Manchester City defender will be in the ideal physical condition to start.

England have alternatives to the 30-year-old, with the likes of Brighton’s Lewis Dunk and Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa in their 26-man squad.

Considering Marc Guehi started alongside the treble-winner against Iceland, he might have cemented his place in the side.

John Stones should be allowed to rest against Serbia if he is unwell

If Stones is unwell and does not feel fully sharp against Serbia, England boss Gareth Southgate should rest him.

While Dragan Stojković’s side will not be a pushover when the Three Lions face them — known to take the game to the opposition.

But even so, England have the quality in defence and attack to beat Serbia.

Gareth Southgate should allow his most experienced centre-back the time to rest and recover to ensure he is feeling as sharp as possible for the remainder of the tournament.

If Stones feels close to his best from a physical standpoint, that will only boost England’s chances of winning Euro 2024.
