Tapo’s solar-powered security cam offers sustainable surveillance

TP-Link’s Tapo smart-home brand announced the launch of the wireless Tapo SolarCam (model Tapo C402 KIT) today. The budget-priced Wi-fi security camera comes bundled with a solar panel that should eliminate the need to retrieve and recharge its battery.

The Tapo SolarCam aims to eliminate common inconveniences associated with traditional security cameras, such as complex wiring, frequent battery recharges, and dependence on nearby power outlets. By harnessing solar power, the camera can continuously monitor with just 45 minutes of direct sunlight daily.

Users can attach the solar panel directly to the camera, or install it separately using a 13-foot charging cable, allowing for flexible installation. Even without sunlight, the built-in 6400mAh battery can function for up to 180 days on a full charge, according to Tapo.

The $60 camera captures video in 1080p resolution and offers color night vision, which should ensure image clarity even in low-light conditions. Integrated spotlights help illuminate the camera’s field of view and double as a deterrent to potential intruders.

With an IP65 weatherization rating, both the camera and the solar panel are built to withstand dust, rain, snow, and sun, with a weatherization rating of IP65 (our in-depth explanation of IP codes tells you everything you need to know about those ratings).

The solar panel can be attached directly to the camera or installed separately using a 13-foot charging cable.

Tapo

Tapo says its camera boasts several smart features: Users can enable custom activity zones to monitor areas that matter most, with smart detection that distinguishes between people and vehicles to reduce false alarms. Video can be stored locally on microSD card (capacities up to 512GB are supported, but buyers will need to supply their own) or in the cloud with a Tapo Care subscription.

Users control and manage the Tapo SolarCam through the Tapo app. You can to define privacy zones, locate specific recorded events, and share access with family and friends from your smartphone.

The Tapo SolarCam kit is available on Amazon for $59.99.
