Liverpool decide they definitely do not want to sell their ‘exceptional’ player this summer after interest

Liverpool endured a tricky season last time out under Jurgen Klopp, although the manager can still be proud of his final campaign at the club.

His side may have fallen short in Europe, but domestic success was clinched in the League Cup, and more importantly a top-four league place was also secured.

That means Champions League football is coming back to Anfield next season, with new manager Arne Slot needing a big, strong squad in order to compete.

The Dutchman is currently settling into life on Merseyside, but he will be eager to start building his squad ahead of the new season.

And key to that will be a successful transfer window, with plenty of pressure to get things right this summer.

Liverpool transfer stance on Joe Gomez emerges amid Bayern Munich links

It remains to be seen exactly what areas he will want to strengthen with new faces, but keeping his key players will be equally crucial.

One such player is Joe Gomez, with the defender currently on international duty with England after a top campaign for his club.

According to the Mirror, however, he is now wanted by German giants Bayern Munich, with their new manager Vincent Kompany a fan of his versatility.

But the publication added that Liverpool will immediately issue a hands off warning regarding Gomez, who they value as a hugely important player.

Arne Slot must keep hold of Joe Gomez

That view from the powers that be on Merseyside should be shared by Slot, who will appreciate what Gomez brings to the team.

The defender hasn’t always been on the first-team scene at Anfield, having often struggled in important matches.

But he proved his ability at the back under Klopp last season, and impressively featured all across the backline, with teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold labelling his displays ‘exceptional’.

Such versatility is a very welcome attribute, meaning Slot knows he can rely on Gomez to play centrally or at full-back as and when required.

The 27-year-old is now more mature and more experienced than when he arrived at the club, and importantly seemingly is there for the long haul after signing a new long-term deal in 2022.

It is uncertain what role he will play for England at Euro 2024, but the overall experience under Gareth Southgate will undoubtedly develop his game even further.
