Aston Villa fans should be ‘happy’ about new target despite ‘eye-catchingly awful’ Leeds spell

Aston Villa have been told why they should be happy about the signing of one player that could soon arrive at Villa Park.

It’s been a fast start to the summer transfer window for Aston Villa, as Unai Emery and Monchi get to work at bolstering the squad.

First, Villa must overcome their PSR concerns, which they are in the process of aiding at the cost of losing Douglas Luiz.

The midfielder is close to joining Juventus as part of a swap deal, with Weston McKennie and Samuel Iling-Junior due to arrive at Villa Park, plus cash.

There are mixed feelings surrounding the deal considering the importance of Luiz in Emery’s squad, with concerns there particularly about McKennie.

Aston Villa told to be ‘happy’ with Weston McKennie transfer despite disappointing Premier League audition

Luiz and McKennie are positionally similar however, the United States international falls below the calibre of the Brazilian.

Early jugement of McKennie may be negative from a Villa point of view due to his dreary half-season loan spell at Leeds United over 2022/23.

It was a poor time for the midfielder during a dreadful time at Elland Road however, Villa fans have now been urged to be happy with the deal for one reason.

Speaking on the For The Love of Paul McGrath Aston Villa Podcast, Italian football expert Nima Tavallaey Roodsar gave an insight into where it went wrong for McKennie at Leeds.

“The problem with Weston McKennie is that when he’s bad, it is awful, it’s eye-catchingly awful. I think that especially was true in the Premier League for Leeds.

“I think it was completely imploding, Jesse Marsch was not the right person to take over, you go from Bielsa to Marsch, there’s a different calibre.

“You put someone [McKennie] in there without really having given him any real directions and the rest of the team wasn’t balanced, I don’t think he was set up to fail, but I do think an aspect of that was true.”

After evaluating the struggles that McKennie battled through at Leeds, Nima Tavallaey Roodsar gave his verdict on why Villa may be different for the United States ace.

“I think with someone like Emery, who is so tactically drilled, who doesn’t leave anything to chance, if he’s accepted this, if he’s green-lighted this, then he has a role and an idea for McKennie, that’s something to be happy about.”

Unai Emery could get the best out of McKennie

If there’s any manager that fans would hope to be in charge of a player who must redeem himself in the Premier League, it’s Emery.

The Spaniard has helped several Villa players both turn around and ignite their careers at Villa Park, most prominently through the building of Leon Bailey and the improvement of Ollie Watkins.

Not many would have believed that Bailey could become the player that he has under Emery, with a similar level of attention now needed to restore faith in McKennie.

The 25-year-old has the fundamentals to succeed in the engine room in the Premier League, being rigid in his approach to play although, his lack of technical knowhow is a slight concern.

Still, Emery will undoubtedly find a way to utilise McKennie’s skillset, no matter how much it may differ from Luiz.
