Aston Villa make contact with £26m ‘monster’ over transfer that would change Ezri Konsa plan

Unai Emery could now rethink his plans for Ezri Konsa as Aston Villa have made contact with one possible transfer target.

Aston Villa will be eager to add star quality to their squad this summer in preparation for next season’s Champions League.

The Villans secured a spot among Europe’s elite by finishing fourth in the 2023/24 Premier League, with plenty of work still to be done.

Unai Emery and Monchi have already been linked with several players in the build-up to the summer transfer window, with contact now reported with one target.

Aston Villa make contact with transfer target Denzel Dumfries

While a host of midfield and attacking targets have been linked, the Villans are now said to be admirers of Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries.

A report from Italian outlet CalcioMercato claims that the Midlands club have ‘already contacted’ the 28-year-old’s agent surrounding a possible move.

The source mentions AC Milan’s interest in Matty Cash as a factor to Monchi eyeing Dumfries, who is an experienced right-back.

Last month, La Gazzetta Dello Sport reported that Inter would demand a price in the region of €30m (£26m) for the fullback.

Villa are in desperate need of a new right-back this summer, whether or not Cash departs, with the Poland international being the only senior-level right-sided defender at the club.

Signing Dumfries could make Unai Emery rethink plans for Ezri Konsa

Due to Cash’s unreliable presence in defence, Emery has favoured playing centre-back Ezri Konsa on the right side to bolster the stability.

While the Englishman has done an admirable job at covering the right-side, the 26-year-old is best suited in central defence.

Konsa is a better defender than Cash although the Poland international is stronger at progressive play, with Dumfries now able to offer an alternative option at right-back.

As seen above, the Dutchman offers more of a threat going forward than Konsa does, suggesting that if he is signed, Emery could revert back to playing the Englishman in his favoured central role.

It would be the ideal signing for Villa, who could have a progressive outlet in defence without jeopardising defensive quality, with Dumfries once described as a ‘monster’ by journalist Alan Rzepa.

Now that Cash’s future is uncertain, it will be interesting to see how Villa navigate the position in the summer transfer window, with contact made with Dumfries.
