The mystery surrounding Tobi Oluwayemi's future at Celtic

Celtic have plenty of existing fringe players at the club that Brendan Rodgers will need to make a decision on.

On one hand, Gustaf Lagerbielke and Hyeongyu Oh could become two early Parkhead departures amid interest from Lecce and Genk, respectively.

Internally, Bosun Lawal is set to be handed a chance to impress once Celtic report back to Lennoxtown, giving a feel for the type of action Rodgers could take to introduce young talent into his squad in 2024/25.

Looking at the other side of the debate, contractual wrangles will also need to be taken care of, so we take a look at one situation that doesn’t exactly appear clear-cut.

Tobi Oluwayemi and his mysterious situation at Celtic

Brought in from Tottenham Hotspur back in 2021, Celtic goalkeeper Tobi Oluwayemi has rarely been seen outside of training with the first-team during his time at Parkhead.

Despite being sidelined with a knee injury for much of the season, he now appears to be back at full tilt heading into the summer; nevertheless, his contract is set to expire this summer, and there has been little to no communication over whether he is actually still on the books or if he has already signed an extension.

While at Celtic, the former England Under-20 international has had the honour of learning from Joe Hart, who would’ve done his utmost to impart some wisdom in his direction.

He is also now 21, which is still young in goalkeeper terms; however, he is too old to feature for the B Team, that is, if he remains at Parkhead, meaning the remaining options are either to introduce Oluwayemi into the senior fold, loan him out (providing he extends his stay) or to sell him on.

The official Celtic website states his last deal came in 2021, ensuring he would stay until ‘at least the summer of 2024’ in Glasgow. That time is now upon us, but there is still no clarity over his future.
