'Gone up another level': Alan Shearer says £225k-a-week Man City star actually became even better last season

Alan Shearer has claimed that one Manchester City improved even further as a player during the 2023/2024 season.

At top clubs like Manchester City, the expectation is for every player to elevate their game season upon season.

Even stars like Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden and Ruben Dias, as the club evidently demands excellence. In case of a decline in performance, Pep Guardiola does not seem to hesitate to even drop the big names.

Alan Shearer makes fresh claim about “outstanding” Phil Foden

The City cohort strived for greatness once again last season and they bore the fruits of their labour — winning their fourth successive Premier League title.

One player who certainly did was Foden, who has headed into Euro 2024 in the form of his life.

The £225,000-a-week man has emerged as one of England’s main men — alongside names like Harry Kane, Declan Rice and John Stones.

Alan Shearer feels Foden further elevated his standard as a player last season.

Shearer said on BBC Match of the Day: Top 10: “Outstanding. Incredible. He’s gone up another level this season from already a really high level that he was at.”

“Deservedly the [Premier League] Player of the Year. Goals, assists, didn’t play well in the cup final but hey, he’s had a bad game, so, not a bad season. He’s had an incredible season and let’s hope he carries that into the Euros.”

All eyes will be on Phil Foden at Euro 2024

As Alan Shearer stated, Foden undoubtedly had a remarkable season and he has further taken a step up as a player.

At Euro 2024, all eyes will be on the Stockport-born midfielder to replicate his form for Manchester City in an England shirt.

According to Wayne Rooney, the six-time Premier League winner should be deployed as a number 10. However, Rooney foresees Foden playing as a left-winger at the tournament.

During City’s latest league-winning season, the decorated attacker cemented his reputation as a difference-maker — capable of even winning games on a standalone basis for one of the best teams in the world.

Foden’s reputation will skyrocket if he manages to get the goals and assists he did at the Etihad Stadium for the Three Lions at Euro 2024.

Whether the Englishman will be deployed in his favoured attacking midfield role or out wide is a mystery; but there is enough evidence to suggest that when handed responsibility, the 24-year-old grows in stature.
