Report: Liverpool did express interest in signing £55m striker this summer but he won't be joining them

Liverpool were interested in signing a hugely talented striker, but he won’t be moving to Anfield this summer.

Reds fans are really excited to see what Arne Slot will do after the Dutchman succeeds Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool’s new boss.

The focus now is on transfers and Liverpool have been linked with a bunch of names. However, one of their targets will not be making a move to Merseyside now.

Liverpool showed an interest in signing Benjamin Sesko

Benjamin Sesko has been the talk of the town recently.

The Slovenia international striker was a wanted man this summer after a really impressive season at RB Leipzig in the 2023/24 campaign.

Arsenal were the favourites to sign Sesko, but Manchester United and Chelsea were heavily linked with a move to sign him too.

Now, The Athletic reveal that Liverpool had also expressed an interest in Sesko, with Slot looking to strengthen his side ahead of his debut campaign at Anfield.

Sadly for the Reds and all the interested parties, Sesko will not be on the move this summer.

The 21-year-old, who has been compared to Erling Haaland, has decided that staying at Leipzig is the best path for his development. So, he has penned a new contract there until the summer of 2029.

Sesko had a £55 million release clause in his previous contract, but David Ornstein has revealed that there is no exit clause in his new deal now.

Sesko interest hints at Liverpool’s transfer plans

Everyone has been wondering who will be Slot’s first signing as Liverpool manager.

A new defensive midfielder is expected to be on the agenda, while Liverpool are likely to strengthen their defence as well in this summer’s transfer window.

However, the interest in signing Sesko suggests Liverpool are also looking at a new striker this summer – perhaps to replace Darwin Nunez.

The Uruguay international was not a happy man at the end of the 2023/24 season, so much so that he deleted all Liverpool-related pictures on Instagram.

Fabrizio Romano then revealed that Nunez was looking forward to holding talks with Slot once the Dutchman arrived at Anfield.

Everything is quiet regarding Nunez at the moment, but Liverpool will definitely be on the market for a new striker this summer if the former Benfica man decides to leave.
