Eat My Words: We review Oscar’s Inn, in Newark

This week we decided to review another restaurant recommendation from the Advertiser readers and it hit just the right spot.

Oscar’s Inn, on Baldertongate, Newark, is well loved in the town for it’s cosy atmosphere, with the motto being ‘a country pub in the heart of town’ — and it certainly lived up to it’s reputation.

With fun and country themed decor, it was a very welcoming and friendly atmosphere, made all the better by the staff who welcomed me with a smile and provided excellent service.

Browsing the menu, the pub has a very good range of food, from light bites and sandwiches, to personal-sized and an à la carte menu — with something for every taste and different deals for every day of the week.

Ordering at the bar I opted for a side of fries and the vegetarian pizza, although there is the option to add and remove ingredients if someone wants to customise their meal.

The pizza was very nice, and came loaded with toppings meaning I didn’t feel short-changed and left feeling satifisfied.

I was a little envious of the curry which the person next to me had ordered and came highly recommended, so I will definitely be back for curry night.

As a vegetarian who often struggles to find decent options when eating out I was also pleasantly surprised to find not only a good range of delicious sounding food, but dietary information printed on the menus. This made it easy for anyone with allergies to find out what they can and can’t eat with minimal effort or embarrassment.

Perhaps most importantly the pub is dog friendly and even has a menu specifically for our four legged friends to enjoy.

Overall, Oscar’s Inn proved to be the perfect place for a casual mid-week meal out. Although I was dining alone I felt very comfortable and welcomed throughout, and would love to return with friends and family.

Food: The portion sizes were decent, the food was tasty and the availability of multiple vegetarian and vegan options was a pleasant surprise. ****

Drinks: The pub has a very good range of alcoholic and non-alcohol drinks, including a number of speciality beers on tap. Staff were also able to answer questions and recommend drinks. *****

Decor: The atmosphere feels homely, with quirky country themed decor. I was sat next to a telephone in the shape of a dog holding a bone which I thought was a fun addition. Formal dining with tables is well spaced out so it doesn’t feel cramped and there is a pub garden for those warmer summer days. ****

Staff: The staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Every customer around me was treated well and in a manner that made us feel like friends rather than customers. *****

Price: At just £20 for a main, a side, and a drink I thought the price was very reasonable, and if I had room for dessert it would have only added a few extra pounds, making this meal very reasonably priced. ****
