Taylor Swift's ex breaks cover for the first time as fans mock his proposal

Matty Healy and Gabbriette stunned the world yesterday with news of their engagement, though not all Swifties can bring themselves to be pleased for the happy couple.

A bombshell pair of Instagram stories dropped by Gabbriette Bechtel this week raised eyebrows across the internet, as the model casually revealed her engagement to The 1975 frontman Matty Healy. The adorable news comes just one year after Matty’s breakup with Taylor Swift, and while most fans have accepted that moving on is just something that happens, there is a not insignificant number of Swifties who appear to hold a grudge against the soon-to-be wedded man.

Matty Healy and Gabbriette spotted together for first time after engagement announcement

Matty and Gabbriette played things cool as they stepped out of their New York hotel on June 12, with the Love It If We Made It singer appearing to step in front of his fiancée, as if to protect her from the gaze of the paparazzi. Celebrity couple goals.

Clearly not looking to draw attention to himself, Matty did not show make a point of the engagement ring on his girlfriend’s finger, nor did he flash a cheesy grin for the camera.

Rather, he walked on with his head down and proceeded to carry on with his afternoon – uploading several memes to his Instagram story later that day in typical Matty Healy fashion.

Gabbriette has been making no secret of the engagement, uploading a celebratory photo dump flashing her newly acquired ring from all angles, soundtracked by Charli XCX, after announcing the news while attending the Von Dutch singer’s show.

Singer’s engagement faces criticism from Swifties

While the newly engaged couple appears to be getting on with things as normal, the discourse surrounding the surprise engagement has rolled on to day two on Twitter (X).

Specifically, it appears to be a small but vocal section of Taylor’s support who are using the media frenzy around Matty to air their opinion about him and his past relationship with the Eras Tour star.

Discussing the seemingly sudden nature of the announcement, one skeptical Swiftie wrote the timing of the engagement was ‘intentional’.

And speculating on how Taylor is coping with the news, another Twitter user added: “She is really happy right now and doesn’t give a damn about Rat Man” – a pretty good indicator of how many Swifties view the British frontman.

Pleading for some measured minds to join the conversation, one fed-up user wrote: “Stop making Matty and Gabbriette’s engagement about Taylor I beg”.

Regardless of all the noise online, with Matty’s mom Denice Welsh shouting from the rooftops about how happy she is to be welcoming Gabbriette (and her pet rat) to her family. One can imagine the couple is pretty happy with how this week is going.
