Amidst heavy rain and flooding in South Florida, a federal appeals court has rescheduled arguments in a legal battle surrounding a 2022 state law that restricts the teaching of race-related concepts in universities. The law, known as the "Stop WOKE Act," was championed by Governor Ron DeSantis.

Originally scheduled for Thursday morning in Miami, the hearing has been moved to Friday afternoon by the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

The controversial law outlines various race-related concepts and prohibits instruction that "espouses, promotes, advances, inculcates or compels" students to believe them, claiming such instruction constitutes discrimination.

However, university instructors argue that the law infringes upon their freedom of speech and academic freedom.

A preliminary injunction against the restrictions was previously issued by Chief U.S. District Judge Mark Walker, who deemed the law "antithetical to academic freedom," prompting the state to appeal the decision.
