Russian agent enlisted in Ukrainian army sentenced to 15 years in prison

The SBU apprehended the spy in late February, as he was attempting to flee to Russia-controlled Transnistria, Moldova.

Ukrainian counterintelligence identified the man as a resident of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. In the 2000s, he graduated from Moscow State University with a law degree. It was during his studies that he was recruited by Russian security services.

After university, the agent returned to Ukraine and "waited" for further instructions from his handlers.

In 2023, a Russian handler contacted him and instructed to begin conducting espionage and sabotage on Moscow’s behalf. To carry out his mission, the agent enlisted in one of the brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and was deployed to Bakhmut, Donetsk Oblast. There, he gathered intelligence on the locations and movements of Ukrainian troops.

Convicted of treason and desertion, the man was sentenced to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property.
