South Carolina Senior Deputy Athletics Director Chance Miller is a strong candidate to become the next athletics director at Coastal Carolina, GamecockCentral.com has learned.
Miller is believed to be the top target to take over for Matt Hogue, who is set to take another position at Coastal Carolina following 10 years of directing the Chanticleers’ athletics programs.

A native of Johnson City, Tennessee – the same hometown as former Gamecocks football coach Steve Spurrier – Miller has served on Ray Tanner’s staff in athletics since April of 2013.
Miller began his tenure in Columbia working in athletics compliance, a background he brought to South Carolina from his previous job. From 2009 until arriving at USC, Miller served as an assistant and associate director on the enforcement staff for the NCAA.
In July of 2019, Tanner promoted Miller to Senior Deputy Athletics Director. In that role, Miller is a member of the athletics department’s senior management team. He is also responsible for “overseeing the day-to-day operations and initiatives of the Athletics Department, serves as the senior associate general counsel for the department, provides executive oversight for the office of compliance services as well as serving as the sport administrator for football and women’s and men’s swimming and diving programs,” according to the school.

Prior to his time with the NCAA, Miller was a practicing attorney in New York City.
In 2022, Miller landed on On3’s “rising stars” of college sports administrators list.
Provided an agreement is reached between Miller and Coastal Carolina, it would represent the first opportunity for Miller to run his own athletics department.
Miller and his wife, Lauren, have two children, Cason and Caylor.
