Manchester United believe transfer is 'unique opportunity', ready to rip up plans so can sign 'generational talent'

Manchester United have laid plans to strengthen at centre-back this summer, with a key shortlist of targets set. One star could add to that.

In an ideal situation Manchester United might be pursuing Benfica wonderkid Antonio Silva at centre-back. However, his very expensive release clause means a move is unlikely.

Fabrizio Romano reported previously that Manchester United have a three-man shortlist of Jarrad Branthwaite, Gleison Bremer and Jean-Clair Todibo.

Branthwaite is now clearly emerging as the priority. Now an opportunity has arisen that could prompt the Red Devils to further build on those plans.

Manchester United like Leny Yoro opportunity

According to The Athletic, Manchester United view the possibilty of signing Lille centre-back Leny Yoro as a ‘unique opportunity’.

This is because Yoro, 18, is viewed as a ‘generational talent’, who could be available at a knockdown price.

Unlike Benfica who have Antonio Silva on a long-term deal with a staggering release clause, Yoro’s contract expires in June 2025.

Due to this, Lille have this week admitted Yoro will be allowed to leave the club this summer, along with striker Jonathan David, to avoid losing them on a free transfer next summer.

So while Yoro is ‘not a fundamental part of Manchester United’s recruitment plans’, the opportunity to sign the centre-back could now prompt Ineos to make adjustments.

The Times report that along with signing Branthwaite, with a move progressing well, Manchester United could sign Yoro too, if possible.

Four-way fight emerges for Yoro

There is a four-way battle emerging for Leny Yoro’s services, which will suit Lille as they seek to cash in.

Manchester United face competition for Real Madrid, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain for his signature.

Due to the fact Yoro has emerged as a very exciting option in large part due to his price and potential, losing out would not necessarily throw United’s plans off-balance, as there is a list of other options ready to turn to.

But if it is possible to land the Frenchman, it will be a significant acquisition, landing a player who can be a regular for the club for the next decade, leaving one of the other potential signings on the shelf.

While Real Madrid are early favourites for Yoro, Manchester United are ‘pushing hard’ for his signature, and believe they are in with a chance.
