TV star and presenter dies after 'dementia battle' - 'He was the brightest of us'

Children’s TV star and presenter Michael ‘Gibbo’ Gibson best known for Agro’s Cartoon Connection has died at 69.

Some of the shows you watch as a child make a lasting impression. You can recall faces, catchphrases, and segments even if you haven’t seen them in decades. The people who star in such shows perhaps get a little overshadowed as time goes by, but they were there for the early formative years of so many viewers. If you spent time watching the Australian ’90s show Agro’s Cartoon Connection, which ran for nine seasons between 1990-1997, then the name Michael ‘Gibbo’ Gibson will fill you with nostalgia. Sadly, his death has been announced.

Tragically, Michael ‘Gibbo’ Gibson’s wife Carol has announced the TV star passed away on Monday, June 10th 2024, at the age of 69.

“Many of you may know by now of the passing of my lovely husband Michael,” she confirmed in a touching tribute on Facebook. “He left us after another dementia battle and, while it was sad to watch, I’m grateful he’s now free. He was the brightest of us and we were so fortunate to share his time.” He is survived by her and their two children.

The Express reports that he was diagnosed with the syndrome 18 months before his passing.

Fans will remember him dearly from the aforementioned Channel 7 series, which was hosted by the titular puppet Agro with hosts such as Terera Livington and Ann-Maree Biggar. Michael played the Gibbo character complete with his iconic overalls, but he also served as a producer on the show.

Before his time on that, he studied at NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art) alongside such industry heavyweights as Mel Gibson in the late ’70s.

In addition to his TV work, he also worked at radio stations such as B105 and fulfilled duties as a promotional manager at the Nine Network.

More and more people are learning of the sad news, taking the time to share a tribute in his honor.

“Farewell my funny friend,” Argo’s Cartoon Connection puppeteer Jamie Dunn wrote. “You were hilarious 100 percent of the time! I have nothing but wonderful memories of you.”

Another remembered Michael as “one of Brisbane’s most creative performers… He made a lot of people laugh.”

One called him a “comedy legend”, and he’ll be missed by family, friends, fans, and anybody fortunate enough to encounter him over the years. Rest in peace, Michael.
