EFL club now 'in talks' to sign Sheffield Wednesday man on free transfer this summer - journalist

A League One club is now ‘in talks’ to sign a Sheffield Wednesday man on a free transfer.

Sheffield Wednesday will see a number of first-team players reach the ends of their contracts on June 30th, officially becoming free agents on July 1st.

Josh Windass now looks like one who’s set to become a free agent; the 30-year-old has reportedly rejected a final contract offer from Sheffield Wednesday amid interest from elsewhere in the Championship.

Di’Shon Bernard also looks set to become a free agent on July 1st, with the centre-back currently in the USA where he’s representing Jamaica in Copa America.

Other names have already moved on and sealed moves elsewhere, including Lee Gregory who’s now at Mansfield Town and Reece James who’s joined Rotherham United.

Cameron Dawson is also tipped to leave Sheffield Wednesday this summer, and he could now join Gregory and James in the League One roster for 2024/25.

Cameron Dawson in talks with Bristol Rovers ahead of Sheffield Wednesday exit

Dawson, 28, lost his place in the Sheffield Wednesday XI last season, with Brighton youngster James Beadle taking his place.

Dawson lost form during the first half of the campaign after keeping just four clean sheets in 18 Championship appearances.

The Sheffield-born shot-stopper was offered a new contract last month, per the Sheffield Wednesday retained list.

But it was later revealed that Dawson was likely to reject that contract offer and pursue first-team opportunities elsewhere.

Now, journalist Dan Hargreaves has revealed that League One side Bristol Rovers are ‘in talks’ with Dawson over a possible summer switch to the Memorial Stadium.

Should Cameron Dawson leave Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday got their first summer signing over the line on Friday, signing Ben Hamer on a free transfer.

The 36-year-old goalkeeper will bolster the goalkeeping department in S6 with some valuable experience, and likely pave the way for Dawson to move on.

With Danny Rohl keen for Beadle to return to Sheffield Wednesday this summer, it would’ve likely meant that Dawson would be playing no.2 again next season.

So moving on this summer, after several years with the Owls first-team, looks like a smart move for Dawson, and a move to Bristol Rovers could be an exciting one.

The Gas finished in 15th place of the League One table under former Rotherham United boss Matt Taylor last season.

With a few signings of Dawson’s calibre, Bristol Rovers could be in contention for promotion to the Championship next season.
