'Understand': Journalist claims Sheffield Wednesday in 'advanced stages' over deal for 'outstanding' player

Sheffield Wednesday are now closing in on their first transfer deal of the summer.

Sheffield Wednesday are just days away from the summer transfer window opening and have already been linked with a number of players.

The Owls are expected to complete a free transfer for goalkeeper Ben Hamer, while former Southampton defender Yan Valery has already agreed personal terms on a move back to England.

It now looks like they are nearing another free agent, though this one will only have to make the three mile trip from Bramall Lane.

Sheffield Wednesday set to sign Sheff Utd ace

According to The Star journalist Alex Miller, Wednesday are in the ‘advanced stages’ of bringing Max Lowe to the club.

He wrote on X: “EXC: Understand Sheffield Wednesday are in the advanced stages of completing a deal to sign Sheffield United defender Max Lowe. Left-back, 27yo former Eng youth international.”

Max Lowe joined Sheffield United from Derby County in 2020, but managed only eight appearances in his first season in the Premier League.

The full-back went onto join Nottingham Forest on loan for the 2021-22 campaign and picked up five goal contributions in 21 matches as they were promoted to the top flight.

He then returned to the Championship with the Blades, where he claimed five assists in 26 matches.

Their promotion saw him forced down the pecking order once again, making only four starts before it was confirmed he would be released once his contract expired at the end of the month.

Lowe has also struggled with plenty of injuries during his time at Bramall Lane and was never able to climb his way back up to the starting line-up when available.

However, he was hailed as ‘outstanding’ when fit for Wednesday’s fierce rivals.

Lowe could now look to reignite his career in the Championship and is already in advanced talks with the Owls over a shock free transfer.

The Star’s report claims a medical is likely towards the end of the week, before he joins the club to compete with Marvin Johnson on the left side.

The 27-year-old has also played as a left midfielder, right-back and centre-back during his career, so could be very useful if Danny Rohl was struggling for injuries.

Max Lowe will be added to a very short list

There has been very few players to make the leap from Sheffield United to Sheffield Wednesday, though when journalist Joe Crann took to X to ask fans about any potential moves, there were a few responses.

Sheffield-born Howard Wilkinson began his career with United before moving to Wednesday in 1962, though didn’t make any senior appearances for the Blades.
