Liverpool's Diogo Jota says Manchester City have a £51m player who's really scary

Liverpool star Diogo Jota has claimed that Manchester City have a really scary player in their squad.

The Portuguese attacker has been at Liverpool for nearly four years now. He has been involved in some great battles with Manchester City over the years.

Pep Guardiola’s side have often come out on top in title races, which is unfortunate for Liverpool, but the Reds have done extremely well to stay close to them for so many years.

Jota, when he is fit, is one of Liverpool’s most important players, and he has played with some incredible footballers over the years – for both club and country,

However, when asked to name a player who is scary, he quickly said a Manchester City star’s name.

Liverpool’s Diogo Jota says Manchester City’s Erling Haaland is scary

Manchester City signed Erling Haaland after triggering his £51.2 million release clause in 2022 (BBC).

The Norway international was a star at Borussia Dortmund when he was there, but his stock shot through the roof following his move to the Etihad.

Haaland scored 52 goals and provided nine assists in his debut season and helped Manchester City win the treble.

In the following campaign, he scored 38 goals and provided six assists, which is still an extraordinary return for any striker, let alone one who is still only 23.

Haaland is widely regarded as the best striker in the world now, and Jota’s Liverpool faced him twice in the 2023/24 season. He scored in one of those games.

Now, the Portuguese attacker, who has shared the dressing room with superstars like Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah, has had his say on Haaland.

In a video on Goal, when Jota was asked to name a ‘scary’ player, he quickly replied “Haaland” before bursting out with laughter.

When asked what’s scary about him, he said “I don’t know, his face,” before laughing again.

A look at Haaland’s record against Liverpool

Haaland is probably the last player you want threatening your goal.

The Norwegian is a complete finisher. Not only can he score goals with both his feet and his head, but he has the ability to run in behind as well as be a poacher in the box.

Haaland is a threat in set-pieces too and is just a nightmare to defend against.

However, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have mostly done well whenever they have come up against Haaland over the years.

The 23-year-old has faced Liverpool seven times in his career and has scored just three goals against them. He has only won one of those seven games too.

Perhaps he’s not so scary for Liverpool defenders after all.
