‘Maybe I will’: Mick Schumacher hatches Alex Albon copy plan after Alpine chief’s F1 admission

Mick Schumacher has now hatched a plan to copy Alex Albon as the WEC star strives to return to Formula 1 following a surprise admission from Alpine boss Bruno Famin.

The 25-year-old refuses to give up on his dream of racing in the pinnacle of motorsport after two years away. Schumacher saw Nico Hulkenberg take his seat at Haas following two years with the American outfit after the 2022 campaign. He debuted in F1 at the 2021 Bahrain GP.

Haas felt dropping Schumacher was the best option following expensive crashes at the 2022 Saudi Arabian GP and that year’s Monaco GP. He twice split his VF-22 in half and bowed out of Formula 1 with 12 points from 44 entries, before joining Mercedes as their reserve driver.

Mick Schumacher may copy Alex Albon’s CV idea to secure his return to Formula 1

Schumacher continues to stand patiently on the sidelines of Formula 1 at Mercedes in 2024. But he also switched disciplines after a year without racing to join Alpine for the 2024 World Endurance Championship campaign and also make his 24 Hours of Le Mans debut this June.

Life in WEC has been steady for the German so far but it is not his dream end destination. A return to Formula 1 remains the target for Schumacher, who also admits that ‘any team is a valuable option’. Nine seats on the Formula 1 grid remain unconfirmed for the 2025 season.

Alpine, Aston Martin, Haas, Mercedes, Sauber, Visa Cash App RB and Williams are still to set their full 2025 line-ups. But Schumacher has seldom been associated with a return to F1 for next season, so has hatched a plan to copy Albon in his quest to find a new Formula 1 drive.

Albon famously sent Jost Capito his CV while the German was the team principal of Williams to make his return to F1. The 28-year-old was one year removed from the grid after Red Bull dropped Albon after the 2021 season. Now, Schumacher admits he may follow Albon’s lead.

“Maybe I will start writing my CV and send it to people!” Schumacher told The Independent. “It’s never been a secret [that] my goal is to be back on the grid.

“I’ve shown in multiple ways that I am capable of winning championships. It’s just a matter of it fitting into somebody’s schedule, does it fit into their plan?”

Joining Alpine for the 2024 WEC season and Le Mans may prove to be a great advantage as Schumacher looks to return to F1, as well. Alpine F1 team principal Famin has admitted that it ‘would be a mistake’ to not consider Schumacher while they move to replace Esteban Ocon.

Famin, who is the vice president of Alpine Motorsport, believes Schumacher is a ‘super-fast’ driver after impressing since joining their WEC team. Alpine have also confirmed that Ocon will leave Enstone at the end of his contract with them following the 2024 Formula 1 term.

Alpine must also decide if Pierre Gasly still has a future at the Renault-owned outfit as he is also out of contract. The Enstone natives and Haas are the only teams still to confirm either of their drivers for 2025. So, Schumacher’s WEC ties may help him return to F1 with Alpine.
