Starbucks workers are trying to unionize at a store in Parsippany, New Jersey, making it the only store in Morris County trying to form a union.

The employees are calling for fair compensation, job security and more influence in company decisions.

The Troy Hills Starbucks at 1429 Route 46 was one of 18 Starbucks locations that sent a letter to Starbucks CEO Laxman Narasimhan outlining their demands.

“Though we work at different stores, we are united through our shared experiences and in our demand for higher wages, fair and consistent scheduling, improved benefits, and a safe and dignified workplace,” the letter stated. “As the face of Starbucks, we are dedicated to providing exceptional service to our customers, but we also deserve fair compensation, job security, and a voice in decisions that affect us.”

Along with the Troy Hills Starbucks in New Jersey, four Starbucks locations in the tri-state area also signed onto the letter. They include three locations in New York City and one in Philadelphia.

The five Northeast coffee shops join over 440 other Starbucks locations and 10,500 workers nationwide, who voted to unionize, according to Starbucks Workers United.

Many other Starbucks employees have formed unions in the past few years, starting in 2021 when employees of two stores in Buffalo, N.Y. voted to unionize. They have made their voices heard on days with company-wide promotions.

In November 2023, thousands of unionized employees walked off the job on Starbucks’ Red Cup Day over staffing and scheduling issues during promotional events.
