‘It was tough’: Kieran Trippier shares why he didn’t make it at Manchester City

Kieran Trippier has reflected on his time at Manchester City and why he didn’t succeed at the club.

The right-back started his career in City’s youth ranks before eventually joining Burnley on a permanent transfer back in the 2012 January transfer window.

Prior to this move, the defender had two loan spells with Barnsley and one with Burnley before he joined the Clarets on a permanent basis.

In a City shirt, Trippier made 15 combined appearances for the Manchester club’s U18 and U21 sides but never featured in a senior game for the Blues.

At the age of 33, the Englishman has now shared his thoughts on this early period of his career and why he never made it at the Etihad Stadium.

Opening up to Gary Neville in a recent edition of The Overlap, Trippier had this to say about his period at City.

He said: “I just think I look at my career and I wouldn’t change anything.

“I think at the time when I was there, you had [Pablo] Zabaleta, who was one of the best right-backs for many years and obviously, Micah [Richards] as well, was there.”

“And then I went through the transition where they just got taken over and they started buying loads of players and I needed to get out and play.

“I was at Barnsley and then when I came back and I experienced that and I just think there’s no shame in dropping down a league.

“It was tough for me at Man City at the time because I was never going to play and [I] played against men in the Championship and then that’s when I signed for Burnley.”

Trippier has gone on to have a solid career after City disappointment

Since leaving City, the Newcastle United captain has gone on to feature for clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid where he became a La Liga champion back in the 2020/21 season before returning to England and joining his current side.

Having racked up 36 Champions League appearances and become a regular figure in the senior England side, there’s no doubt that the former City youngster has gone on to have a solid career at the top level since waving goodbye to the Blues.

Taking all of that into account, we feel that Trippier, whorecently said that he’s a big admirer of what Kyle Walker has done during his time with the Citizens, made the right decision in terms of leaving City to get more playing time and progress his career.
