Courtney Cox's tragic truth behind Friend's storyline - 'It was terrible having to be funny'

Friends, the iconic 90’s sitcom, has been stealing our hearts and dominating our screens for 30 years now. So much, we feel akin to the cast themselves, like they were our real-life friends. That’s why a resurfacing of a story about a tragic event Courteney Cox was going through while filming is breaking our hearts all over again.

Friends’ had a show-stopping ten season run from 1994 to 2004, it sits fondly in the heart of every millennial. After a Gen-Z based return to popularity when it dropped on Netflix in 2015, we haven’t been able to get enough of the nostalgic six. Whether it was breaking our hearts as Joey gave Chandler that ‘final’ hug; cringing at Paleontologist Ross as he continually missed his shots with the heart stealing Rachel; or recognizing our own quirks in Monica’s secret closet and Phoebe’s infectious songs. Friends has become a staple of our screens and our lives over the last 30 years.

It’s become harder to separate the celebrity cast from the characters they play, especially after reconnecting with them during the TV reunion on HBO Max in 2021.

This made the recent passing of Matthew Perry, 28 October 2023, even more tragic as the loss was also felt for the beloved Chandler Bing. Matthew Perry’s Friend’s co-stars have paid countless tributes to him, breaking the hearts of fans across the World. Now so many scenes in the show just ‘hit-different’ watching them back.

In a recent resurfacing interview, Courteney Cox has discussed her own tragedy she experienced during filming the iconic show. Courteney admits that it was “terrible having to be funny” during the filming of one particular scene, not long after she had suffered a miscarriage.

Courteney Cox married former partner David Arquette in 1999. The couple were paired up for 11 years and during that period were trying for a baby. Unfortunately, Courteney has a rare gene mutation, MTHFR, that can raise the risk of high blood pressure, blood clots and recurrent miscarriages. Courteney and David had a total of seven miscarriages during this time.

‘It was terrible’

During an interview for NBC in 2004, Courteney tells interviewer Matt Lauer, “…I remember one time I just had a miscarriage and Rachel was giving birth. It was like that same time. Oh my God, it was terrible, having to be funny.”

She goes on to tell Lauer that she can see her own troubles in the scene, however, “I faked it pretty well I think.”

That wasn’t the only mirroring of the actresses private life in the show, Monica and Chandler also struggle to have a baby for two years, reflecting the real-life issues of Courteney and David. Cox states, “No one in my family has a problem [having children]…. I just thought this would not be a problem at all.”

Since learning of the rare antibody in her blood that would attack the fetus, Cox took all the necessary steps to ensure the safe birth of her daughter Coco in 2004. Seems Cox is as resilient and determined in real-life and couldn’t have been a better fit to play fan favorite Monica.

Now, “Remember, if I am harsh with you, it is only because you’re doing it wrong.”

We love you, Monica, thank you for keeping us in line all these years.
