‘The biggest call’: Joe Hart tells Gareth Southgate what to do with Trent Alexander-Arnold vs Serbia

Liverpool ace Trent Alexander-Arnold will undoubtedly have big plans for his Euro 2024 campaign with England.

The Anfield star had another impressive season for his club, and has now been selected by Gareth Southgate for this summer’s major tournament.

But several question marks remain over what exactly the national team manager has in store for the 25-year-old over the coming month.

One major issue is the position he will play in, with the right-back having been named as a mdifielder in the Three Lions squad.

There is, of course, the small matter of whether or not he will even start, with the England squad filled with talent all over.

Plenty of former stars have had their say in the build-up to the tournament, with Roy Keane claiming Alexander-Arnold will be ‘ripped to shreds’ if played in midfield against a top team.

Dean Saunders meanwhile is of the opposite opinion, suggesting that England must go with the Liverpool man in midfield at Euro 2024.

Former Three Lions goalkeeper Joe Hart has now weighed in on the debate, sharing his England XI to face Serbia for BBC Sport.

“The biggest call was who comes into midfield with Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham,” said Hart. “I am going to go with Trent Alexander-Arnold.”

Gareth Southgate should start Liverpool star versus Serbia

The England manager really is in a bittersweet situation in the dugout as the nation’s opening game against Serbia rapidly approaches.

On the one hand, he has an abundance of talent to choose from, with his England XI set to be one of the best in history regardless of who he picks.

At the same time, however, Southgate’s choices will be slaughtered if the Three Lions do not win their first game, never mind draw.

He simply has to get it right when it comes to the starting XI, with Alexander-Arnold certain to make the headlines right after kick-off no matter what.

Having been named in the squad as a midfielder and indeed having been played there in recent times, it seems that Southgate knows exactly what he wants to do with the Liverpool man.

And given his range of passing and creativity, Alexander-Arnold should be named in the starting XI, with the Anfield ace capable of completing a star midfield trio with Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice.
