Manager that 49ers wanted could now go and steal Joe Rodon from Leeds United's clutches - journalist

Joe Rodon’s future is completely up in the air with plenty of clubs interested in beating Leeds United to the Welshman’s signature, and even a manager The 49ers wanted last summer is now keen.

Rodon, 26, sparkled for Leeds during 2023-24. Gretar Steinsson’s move to Elland Road from Tottenham to work as part of the club’s new transfer team saw Leeds and Spurs boast a very solid working relationship.

It saw Rodon and Djed Spence join Leeds last summer on loan and while the latter did not work, Rodon’s spell in Yorkshire could not have gone better from a personal, or Tottenham point of view during 2023-24.

He clocked up 50 appearances and largely played a leadership role as Leeds got to the Championship play-offs. But without promotion, Rodon’s future is in doubt even if the defender wanted to join Leeds.

Even if he was keen, Leeds failing to go up might mean that The Whites are unable to afford a deal to sign Rodon permanently. Tottenham have made a move to make it harder for Leeds as well, this summer.

Graham Potter wants to sign Joe Rodon ahead of Leeds

Spurs have realised that Rodon could bring them in a decent source of cash. His previous deal was due to expire in June but the North Londoners have triggered a clause which extends Rodon’s contract to 2026.

Reports earlier this week stated that Ipswich are interested in landing Rodon with Kieran McKenna a big fan. Southampton are said to be interested, despite already signing Taylor Harwood-Bellis permanently.

Now, Football London reporter Alasdair Gold has taken to his Instagram to share the latest news on Rodon and he says that Leicester could end up with Rodon because they are closing in on Graham Potter.

Leeds wanted Potter before hiring Daniel Farke last summer

Rewing 12 months and The 49ers were just assuming control of Leeds, and looking to find a manager to take over the reigns following Sam Allardyce’s four games at the end of the 2022-23 campaign.

Potter has been out of work since his indifferent stint as manager of Chelsea and Leeds were keen to take him to Elland Road. But, Potter’s stance prevented a move given he did not want to step down a league.

Now, Gold reports that Potter is a big fan of Rodon and if he does join Leicester he would be interested in taking him to The King Power in the coming weeks and months, but it remains a complete unknown.

Gold said: “With the Foxes’ recruitment team liking Rodon, that interest could be maintained should Graham Potter, his former Swansea boss, get the job as one of the favourites to take over from Maresca. Another of Rodon’s former managers, Steve Cooper, was also linked with the job.”
