'A selfish perspective': Joe Crann explains how Sheffield Wednesday have been boosted in Ike Ugbo pursuit

Sheffield Wednesday’s pursuit of Ike Ugbo may now be ‘a bit easier’ after one key thing happened.

Sheffield Wednesday have been eager to re-sign Ike Ugbo after his loan spell concluded last month.

The striker netted seven goals after joining the club from Troyes in January, and is expected to leave France permanently this summer.

While the Owls have already made contact with Troyes over a potential move, it is believed that they aren’t the only club interested and they may have to pay a hefty fee to win the race for his signature.

Any move for Ugbo was expected to be delayed until after the Copa America though, however Wednesday may now have been handed a boost in their bid to bring him back.

It was confirmed yesterday that the 25-year-old had been left out of Canada’s squad for the Copa America, before Jesse Marsch revealed it was actually Ugbo that opted against going to the tournament for personal reasons.

Sheffield Wednesday could try to sign Ike Ugbo earlier than expected

This means Ugbo could instead be in Europe all summer, and journalist Joe Crann believes that could offer Wednesday a major boost.

He wrote on X: “From a selfish perspective it may well make #SWFC’s life a bit easier in their pursuit of his signature.”

The striker’s omission could mean a move happens a lot earlier than originally anticipated, which will mean Wednesday wouldn’t have had to wait over a month to find out whether they could land their first choice no.9.

A permanent move for the striker still seems unlikely

It also means his price tag isn’t going to drastically increase after what could have been an impressive campaign in the United States, which could have also resulted in a much longer list of interested clubs.

While it means things can’t get much harder for Wednesday in their pursuit, it is still looking likely to be very difficult as it is.

It’s unclear whether Ugbo would favour a return to Hillsborough, but there are likely a number of clubs whose finances are likely to push them further ahead than Danny Rohl‘s side.
