After Vaulks: Rohl now can't repeat Sheffield Wednesday mistake with 'incredible' ace this summer - opinion

Danny Rohl desperately needs to avoid repeating a huge mistake at Sheffield Wednesday.

Sheffield Wednesday began their summer brilliantly after managing to avoid relegation on the final day of the season.

They worked quickly to tie Danny Rohl down to a new contract, before Liam Palmer and Barry Bannan also followed by committing their own futures to the club.

While the Owls have now signed Max Lowe and Ben Hamer on free transfers, fans were left disappointed when Will Vaulks joined Oxford United.

Wednesday had offered Vaulks fresh terms and were eager to keep him at the club, but the midfielder believed Oxfordshowed more ‘ambition’ and ‘structure’, which persuaded him to move south.

There was frustration around Hillsborough that the club allowed him to slip beneath their grasp, but if they were able to keep hold of the rest of their key players then perhaps it would be forgotten.

However, it now looks like Josh Windass could be about to join him in heading for the exit door.

The 30-year-old had previously been reported to benearing a new contract in Sheffield, but recent reports have instead claimed he has rejected their final offer and could be on his way out.

Josh Windass’ exit could impact Sheffield Wednesday’s confidence

With the likes of Coventry and Hull interested, Wednesday could be about to make another costly mistake.

Vaulks’ exit was a huge blow, but he could well have found himself on the bench more often than not, with Rohl eager to bolster his squad.

However, it seems likely that Windass could continue his role as a vital player next season, having netted three goals in the Owls’ final three games.

The midfielder’s departure could be absolutely disastrous to Rohl’s side, and not just because of his quality.

Should fans be concerned about what’s going on behind the scenes?

If important players begin to turn down new contracts at the club then it leaves concerns over what is going on behind the scenes and why they are allowing these players to leave.

Wednesday should have a much greater pull with Rohl at the helm, yet their lack of ‘ambition’ proves to be a real issue.

Too many exits can affect the confidence and the spirits among the club, while the permanent absence of such a big game player can only have a negative impact going forward.

Wednesday allowed Vaulks to leave, but they certainly can’t afford to make the same mistake again with ‘incredible’ Windass.

His exit will affect the club both on and off the pitch, while the midfield definitely isn’t an area that the Owls can afford be weakened any further.
