Report: ‘Incredibly talented’ F1 driver now expected to consider leaving his current team for 2025 season

The Formula 1 driver’s market is showing no signs of slowing down despite more than half of the seats for 2025 now being filled.

Red Bull completed their 2025 line-up by announcing an extension for Sergio Perez before the Canadian Grand Prix and Yuki Tsunoda’s new deal was announced after qualifying last weekend.

The grid is beginning to fill up for next year but a lot of drivers are still assessing their options.

One of the only teams with neither of their drivers confirmed for 2025 is Alpine.

The French manufacturer have confirmed that Esteban Ocon will be leaving in the winter but haven’t established who will be replacing him yet.

A report from Formu1a.uno has now shared that he might be followed out of the door by teammate Pierre Gasly.

Once described as ‘incredibly talented’ by triple world champion and former teammate Max Verstappen, Gasly hasn’t had the best season alongside Ocon at Alpine.

The team are struggling to achieve their targets and if a better option comes up then it makes sense for Gasly to explore it.

Pierre Gasly expected to consider leaving Alpine ahead of the 2025 F1 season

On paper, Alpine had their best weekend of the season at the Canadian Grand Prix.

After coming close to disaster in Monaco when Gasly and Ocon collided on the first lap, both drivers crossed the chequered flag in Montreal in the points.

However, that doesn’t explain the full extent of the story, with Ocon asked to let his teammate through in the closing stages to chase down Daniel Ricciardo.

He wasn’t happy with the decision – especially as Gasly couldn’t get close enough to the Australian to challenge him – and was even more frustrated that he wasn’t handed the place back before the end of the Grand Prix.

Gasly now sits above Ocon in the Drivers’ Championship and it looks clear that he’s been prioritised even if team principal Bruno Famin has suggested that, “we will not put aside Esteban [Ocon] at all.”

It might be a tactic Alpine are using to try and persuade Gasly to stay beyond the end of 2024.

Alpine want to tie Gasly down to a long-term deal before this year, but it’s understood if the opportunity arises for him to move on, he might just take it.

Alpine and Pierre Gasly both assessing their options

The report from Formu1a.uno suggests that preliminary talks are underway between Alpine and Gasly.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise and is likely the case across the paddock even among teams and drivers who almost certainly don’t have a future together.

However, the report goes on to say that a ‘change in allegiance’ for Gasly cannot be ruled out.

They believe that if a ‘more promising’ opportunity comes up, Gasly can be expected to ‘consider new pastures’.

Looking at the available seats on the grid, the two teams that stand out are Haas and Audi.

However, Haas is very likely to be the next destination for Esteban Ocon and with Oliver Bearman also in their sights, it’s hard to see Gasly joining the American team.

The other option – Audi – is more intriguing with their top targets all seemingly heading elsewhere.

Carlos Sainz is William’s number one target and Ocon might be out of the picture as well.Gasly has been linked with the German team and their long-term prospects might be better than Alpine’s.
