Angel Reese continues her strong WNBA rookie season by tying a league rookie record on Sunday. During the Chicago Sky vs. Indiana Fever game, Reese tallied 11 points with 13 rebounds and she tied the rookie record for most consecutive double-doubles with six.
Reese set the mark as the Sky lost to the Fever for the second time this season. It was the second matchup between Reese and Caitlin Clark, who led the Fever with 23 points, eight rebounds and nine assists.
Despite a strong individual performance from Reese, it was a frustrating day for her. She was called for a flagrant-1 foul after making contact with Clark’s head in the third quarter. And after the game, the former LSU star sounded off on officials for making consistent calls.
“For inside, I think we were playing really hard. I think we went up strong a lot of times and we didn’t get a lot of calls,” Reese said. “Going back and looking at the film, I’ve seen a lot of calls that weren’t made. I guess some people got a special whistle.
“I’m still proud of Kamilla [Cardoso] going out and still getting a double-double. That’s something y’all are not going to be able to stop, regardless of the referees. We’re here for a while. We’re not going to be denied, no matter what you guys try to do. But, our goal is to win and we’re going to do whatever it takes to win.”
How Angel Reese adjusted to playing in the WNBA
Reese was selected by the Sky at No. 7 overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft. She is one of the leading candidates to win Rookie of the Year, averaging 12.1 points, 10.2 rebounds and 1.8 steals per contest. When talking to CBS Sports last week, Reese revealed how she adjusted to playing in the pro league.
“The speed is actually faster of course,” Reese said. “But, I think for me, coming into the league I knew defense and rebounding is something that I always can take to the next level and I knew that was gonna be my thing. I think I’ve done a great job being great on defense and rebounding.
“I think I have a lot more improvement for growth offensively, but I think I’ve done a great job so far. I think my transition has been great. It hasn’t been a super big, huge surprise because Kim Mulkey prepared me for this moment at LSU. Our practice was like four hours. We were ready. We were working. I thought it was gonna be harder.”
