Report: What Crystal Palace staff member said about Marc Guehi before England 1-0 Serbia

Crystal Palace No.6 Marc Guehi made his debut for England at a major tournament in Sunday’s 1-0 win over Serbia, as UEFA EURO 2024 began successfully for the Three Lions.

The £18m man was the only member of Gareth Southgate’s starting XI who could be classed as inexperienced on the international scene, with just 11 caps to his name heading into the Group C clash.

Nevertheless, the man from Abidjan was superb – and a Crystal Palace staff member could see it coming based on what they said about Marc Guehi before the game…

What someone at Crystal Palace said about Marc Guehi

The Daily Mail have now revealed a text conversation they had with a “member of Crystal Palace’s training ground team” about Guehi.

It is said that the Copers Cope employee wrote: “They (Serbia) can target him as much as they like, Marc won’t give them an inch.

“Marc will handle that battle, he’s super intelligent. He’s got the body strength to deal with those two (Dusan Vlahovic and Aleksandr Mitrovic). He won’t get pinned by either. That’s not a problem for him.”

Whoever this staff member is, they know Guehi well.

The 23-year-old did not look phased at any stage of Sunday’s 1-0 win over Serbia, completing 51 out of 53 passes at a success rate of 96% while also taking 60 touches of the ball.

SofaScore also shows that Guehi made two clearances, one block and one tackle on a night where Vlahovic and Mitrovic – £67m and £50m strikers respectively – struggled to get anything out of him.

It was a superb display against two very physical, old fashioned No.9 style forwards, in which you would have presumed the Crystal Palace defender had been playing for England for many years.

Good news for the Eagles

If Guehi keeps playing like this at UEFA EURO 2024, his value will skyrocket as the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool monitor his availability.

Unlike Ebere Eze and Michael Olise, the England international is not thought to have a fixed release clause in his contract, so the better he performs in Germany, the more money we can demand once the tournament is over.

Hopefully, Guehi stays at Selhurst Park, but his promising displays on the international scene will at least mean Crystal Palace end up receiving as much as possible in case he does depart.
