"I'd go with"... Gary Cahill wants Gareth Southgate to start "real leader" Crystal Palace star at EURO 2024

Crystal Palace have five players heading to Euro 2024 and of these five, four happen to be in the England squad.

It’s a testament to the work Oliver Glasner has done in a short time as the manager of Crystal Palace that he saw more of his players brought to Germany by Gareth Southgate than any other club.

The Eagles concluded the season on hot form and it’s easy to understand why the players are the talk of the town, with Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi likely to be attracting interest following the tournament this summer.

But will both play? Well according to Gary Cahill who made 47 appearances for the Eagles, there is one Palace player who should absolutely be starting against Serbia on Sunday.

Gary Cahill wants to see Marc Guehi start for Crystal Palace at Euro 2024

England kick-start their Euro 2024 campaign on Sunday against Serbia and for former Palace defender Gary Cahill, there’s one player who needs to be starting.

Speaking to The Sun, Cahill has tipped Guehi to fill the sizeable boots of Harry Maguire this summer.

“No Maguire is a massive blow for the country. He’s experienced in a position we haven’t really got much experience at the moment.

“Every England career starts from somewhere. The opportunity arises when sometimes something unfortunate happens to others. I see a lot of responsibility on John Stones’ shoulders and it will be a new partnership.

“I’d go with Guehi. Gareth has relied on him a little bit. I get the feeling that Gareth’s confident with him.

“Every time he’s played, he’s been good. He’s had a good season at the Palace. I think he is a real leader. It would be new for Marc. But I think he’ll be able to handle that.”

Cahill, with this opinion, is right alongside Conor Gallagher in calling for Guhei to start.

Guehi clearly has Southgate’s trust

This summer’s Euro squad has been different to any other squad that Southgate has named during his time in charge of England.

Usually, Southgate was said to have favourites and he wouldn’t deviate from them. But this summer has seen players chosen on merit.

Guehi should be there on merit, but having barely played in the past three or four months, Guehi being selected and handed the number six jersey is a sign of the trust Southgate has in him.

This factor, along with the fact he’s probably better than the other options should see him comfortably chosen to partner Stones this summer.
