Man retires from Asda Newark after 8 years of service and grandson follows his footsteps

An Asda worker is retiring after years of distinguished service and handing over the trolley straps to his 17-year-old grandson.

Peter Townsend, 68, has worked at the Newark Asda on Lombard Street for eight years and not only his grandson Matthew Haynes joined him over six weeks ago, but two other of his grandchildren work at the store — Tiffany on the counters and Rob on home shopping.

Known as Peter the Porter, his last day at the store was Wednesday (June 12) and Matthew took over the role as porter.

He said: “I’ve been training Matthew up and showing him the ropes and he’s taken to it like a duck to water.

“It’s his first ever job and he’s loving it.

“He’s following in my footsteps and taking notice of everything.

“He’s a good lad and gets on with the customers many of whom know he’s my grandson.

“I’ve loved working here, every minute of it. It’s been brilliant.

“It’s one of those jobs where you want to come to work. It’s the people, simple as that.”

His grandson Matthew added: “I got the opportunity to learn from his years of knowledge and experience and it’s been great having that extra time to spend with my grandad.

“Every day brings new challenges and I enjoy interacting with the public.

“Asda has made me feel really welcome and supported.

“I’m glad that I was given the opportunity to follow in the legend’s footsteps.”
