Penn State news, notes, and updates for June 16 include a non-conference wrestling matchup for the 2024-2025 season, headlines of the day, and more.

It’s time to dive into Sunday’s top tweets and stories about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

We start with the first piece of scheduling news for head coach Cael Sanderson’s wrestling team ahead of the new season. American coach Jason Borelli announced that his team will travel to State College for a dual meet with the Nittany Lions. The official Penn State wrestling Twitter account confirmed the news. But, a date is not yet set for the match. The EIWA school last came to State College during the 2019-2020 season. Vincenzo Joseph, Mark Hall, and Shakur Rasheed all won by fall on Senior Day en route to a 40-3 triumph to close out that year’s regular season.

It will not be surprising if American ends up in the late February portion of this year’s schedule, too. It is the first known match for Sanderson’s team. More will be announced throughout the summer before the full schedule is released in September. The Big Ten could announce home and away opponents sooner than that, however, perhaps in July as it did last year. Unlike other sports, though, the wrestling schedule tends to come out closer to the start of the season. But, individual dates like this one will continue to trickle out.

Quote of the day

“I’m impressed with him. He got here, he’s a big body guy. He didn’t time well when he first got here. That’s not a knock on him by any means, because he is such a big body. But, when you compare his initial baseline testings, compared to the rest of our wideouts, the way they move at that position, he was definitely a step slower. He’s closed the gap. He’s done a great job. Speed is a huge thing for him that we addressed early. And he’s in a really good spot right now. I see his body. He’s leaned down. He’s in a really good spot.”
