'There was an approach': Fabrizio Romano shares update on Inter Miami's pursuit to sign Angel Di Maria

Fabrizio Romano has shared an update on Inter Miami’s pursuit to sign Argentina international Angel Di Maria.

The 36-year-old winger has recently emerged as a target for the Herons, with Di Maria now a free agent having left Benfica at the end of this season with the veteran forward now preparing for the Copa America.

With reports surfacing that a deal had already been agreed between Di Maria and Inter Miami, many fans had suspected that the Argentine superstar could soon be announced as a new signing for the MLS franchise.

Yet an update from transfer expert Romano seems to suggest otherwise.

Di Maria yet to agree anything with Inter Miami despite interest

Taking to social media, Romano posted that Inter Miami are yet to reach any sort of agreement with Di Maria, though an approach has been made and there is interest in a deal being completed.

Romano said on Twitter: “Angel Di Maria has currently not agreed terms with Inter Miami, despite reports. There was an approach weeks ago, there’s interest but nothing is done or close at this stage. He remains out of contract at Benfica on June 30, as things stand.”

With Inter Miami having all three Designated Player spots filled, signing Di Maria this summer could be quite the logistical challenge for the Florida franchise if they were to step up their interest.

As a result, a move in the January transfer window could be more suitable for Inter Miami, where they could have the chance to buy down the likes of Luis Suarez and Leonardo Campana to free up a DP slot.

Herons have to play the long game if they’re to land Di Maria

Di Maria is clearly the right type of profile Inter Miami should be targeting in the Lionel Messi era of the club, with the Argentine superstar one of the biggest names in soccer and a player with plenty to offer.

Yet this summer might be too big a task for Inter Miami to land the veteran attacker, with January a more ideal window for the Herons to make their play for the former PSG and Manchester United forward.

As a result, playing the long game could be worth it for Di Maria, who in 2025 could complete Inter Miami’s attack if Suarez is still around, with Messi expected to be with the Herons until 2026.
