Theo Walcott names Arsenal icon as the only attacker who was better than Robin van Persie

Theo Walcott has named an Arsenal icon as the only attacker who he believes was better than former striker Robin van Persie.

The Gunners have been blessed with some truly fantastic forwards in recent years, from the aforementioned Walcott and Van Persie to the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

With Bukayo Saka on-track to become an Arsenal legend in his own right, the new generation of Gunners have a lot to live up to when it comes to leading the line for Mikel Arteta given who has played for the club.

Yet Walcott has suggested that only one attacker was better than his former teammate Van Persie.

Thierry Henry named as the only Arsenal forward better than Van Persie

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Walcott was asked to compare numerous Arsenal attackers starting off with Van Persie, with the former England international waiting until Thierry Henry’s name came up before opting against the Dutchman.

Whilst Van Persie’s legacy at Arsenal was all-but tarnished after his 2012 move to Manchester United where the striker won the Premier League title, there’s no denying that the attacker was truly special on his day.

A Premier League Golden Boot winner in the 2011/12 season, Van Persie, when fit and firing, was one of the best attackers in the Premier League and by extension all of Europe, with the forward a regular for the Netherlands.

Indeed, whilst some attackers at Arsenal could be argued as better than Van Persie, the former Emirates Stadium captain is hard to beat when it comes to direct comparisons, except, of course, when it comes to Henry.

Arsenal will never see an attacker as incredible as Henry

Van Persie and Walcott are two of the best attackers to have played for Arsenal in the 21st century, yet when it comes to the club’s entire history, the Gunners will never see someone as prolific as Henry.

The former French international’s greatness is well-documented at this stage, with Henry Arsenal’s all-time leading goalscorer, a record that is unlikely to be beaten any time soon.

A true football icon and arguably the greatest Premier League player of all time, Henry’s status will never be topped at Arsenal, something many fans would ideally like to keep in the years to come.
