Report: Sheffield Wednesday have 'made a move' to sign Scottish gem and could launch double bid

Sheffield Wednesday could swoop for two teenagers from the Scottish Championship this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday had one of the oldest squads in the Championship last season, while their continuous relegation battle meant the younger players were rarely given a chance.

The U21s will be eager to follow in the footsteps of Bailey Cadamarteri though, while the likes of Liam Palmer, George Hirst and Joe Wildsmith have enjoyed success since coming through the academy.

The Owls are now eager to add to their youth ranks as they build for the future and are looking to Scotland to do so.

Sheffield Wednesday make a ‘move’ to sign Scottish starlets

According to Daily Record, Wednesday have ‘made a move’ to sign Queen Park’s Max Willoughby.

The report claims Danny Rohl‘s side have invited the teenager to visit Yorkshire and are eager to snap him up on a free transfer.

They face competition from a number of clubs though, with Blackpool and Reading also interested.

Willoughby rose up through the ranks at Motherwell before moving to the Scottish Championship in January, having already turned down a move to Rangers.

His grandad, Alex Willoughby, played for the Scottish giants in the 1960s and netted 47 goals in 97 matches.

Rangers, Norwich and Bournemouth were eager to sign him at the start of the year, though it is unclear whether they will revisit their interest this time round.

Willoughby isn’t the only Queen’s Park star that Wednesday are after either, with the report claiming that they are also after his teammate Aiden McGinlay.

The 17-year-old left Partick Thistle’s academy to join Queen’s Park in January, while their director of football Darren O’Donnell is ‘keen’ to tie him down to a new contract.

The Owls could rely on their academy more next season

Wednesday will face a battle to sign the Scottish duo, but could really be boosted if they can strengthen their academy.

The likes of Joey Phuthi and Favour Onukwuli have been closing in on a place in the first-team squad, but Rohl has heavily relied on his more experienced players in a bid to avoid relegation.

If the Owls can push themselves further up the table next term then there should be more breathing room to give opportunities to their rising stars and hopefully welcome more players like Cadamarteri.
