‘Most likely thing’: Juan Pablo Montoya shares why he thinks Williams is the best 2025 option for Carlos Sainz

Carlos Sainz has to decide on his Formula 1 future sooner rather than later with options on the grid beginning to run out.

Ferrari made the bold but unarguable decision to sign seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton for the 2025 season leaving Carlos Sainz without a seat.

Speaking on the W Radio Colombia YouTube channel, Juan Pablo Montoya has spoken about the Spaniard’s future.

Carlos Sainz is one of the fastest drivers on the grid but is another driver in the long history of Formula 1 who is a victim of his circumstances.

Manufacturers are less and less likely to take a risk on a driver change leaving Sainz to look further down the paddock for his next seat than he would have liked.

Montoya has now explained why out of Sainz’s dwindling options he should move to Williams next year.

Team principal James Vowles has not hidden his desire to hire the Spaniard and Montoya has suggested that current Williams star Logan Sargeant already knows his time with the team is up.

Juan Pablo Montoya tells Carlos Sainz why he should choose Williams

When Sainz discovered that he wouldn’t be retained by Ferrari beyond the end of the 2024 season, there were a few potential destinations on the grid.

The two most obvious spots were at Red Bull where Sergio Perez’s contract was expiring and directly replacing Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes.

However, Red Bull decided to retain Perez despite his worrying recent form and Toto Wolff only has eyes for two drivers to replace Hamilton: Max Verstappen or Kimi Antonelli.

Aston Martin were never really in the conversation after confirming Fernando Alonso so quickly leaving Sainz having to look in the bottom half of the Constructors’ Championship.

Williams have now emerged as the most likely destination for Sainz with F1Oversteer understanding that he’s in line to join Alex Albon at the team next year.

Juan Pablo Montoya has now explained why he believes that it’s the right decision for Sainz to join Williams over Audi who have also made an offer to the 29-year-old.

Carlos Sainz the key to the rest of the 2025 F1 driver’s market

Talking about the three-time race winner’s future, Montoya said: “The most likely thing is that Carlos [Sainz] will end up at Williams.

“I think it is the best option he has. Honestly, I really think that Williams is a better option at this moment than Audi because it is an organisation that has already suffered over the years.

“They are already restructured, they already have everything and they are going up and they are going to improve.

“They’re going to be a much better team and if you look every year, they have a better car and they are improving a lot each time.

“Carlos’s mistake, it was strange because his car did go and he crashed and the reason he didn’t hit the brakes right there is like he reversed and thought I can start right there again if you see what I mean.

“He didn’t think when he broke down and tried to go down the left, he didn’t think people are going to drive down the left side of him and he didn’t see it.

“The truth is it’s a racing incident. Sometimes you make a mistake and it is what it is.”

Williams will hope that Sainz does decide to commit to the team and confirming his future at his home race in Spain would be fantastic timing.

It would also quickly see the rest of the teams around Williams begin to make their moves in the driver’s market once the top free agent is off the market.

We could be in a situation where some drivers on the grid know more than halfway through the year that their services are no longer required in 2025.
