The latest report on Celtic's pursuit of Paulo Bernardo and reading between the lines

Celtic are in negotiations to try and sign Paulo Bernardo from Benfica following his successful loan spell at Parkhead last campaign.

The Portugal Under-21 international is now back at his parent club, and there have been various reports claiming he has his heart set on a permanent move to Glasgow.

Believed to have a release clause sitting at £6 million, The Daily Mail’s Stephen McGowan has cited that Celtic are looking to facilitate a deal worth around £3.5 million for his services.

Nevertheless, outlets in Portugal claim the fee could be higher, but at this stage, it is impossible to tell what bracket would be enough for Brendan Rodgers to secure him after his exploits in 2023/24.

Showing some moments of real promise, he registered four goals and three assists in 33 appearances across all competitions [Transfermarkt].

Either way, some fresh information concerning his apparent wage stance has come to light, per a new report from his homeland.

According to Record, Celtic are claimed to be having difficulties matching Bernardo’s salary demands, and there is work to be done on that front. Negotiations are still ongoing, per the publication.

The outlet claim he is on a substantial weekly pay packet that could severely complicate proceedings, but there are some questions to be had surrounding the report mentioned that should be highlighted.

Salary Sport note that Bernardo is mooted to earn £5,800 per week, and the wrangle in question supposedly centres around terms signed when he was 18 and expected to develop at a similar rate to the likes of Joao Felix.

At this time of year, speculation is rife, which frustrates supporters. I understand this as a fan myself, so it is only fair to evaluate information by trying to provide the full picture from reports that will undoubtedly do the rounds.

In the due course of time, the reality of Celtic’s situation with Bernardo will come to light. Hopefully, the Bhoys can deal him in on a full-time basis.
