Luke Shaw surprisingly left out two influential Man Utd stars from his best XI of players he played alongside

England defender Luke Shaw surprisingly snubbed two influential Manchester United teammates from the all-time best XI players he played alongside in his career.

Luke Shaw’s 2023-24 season at Manchester United was marred with injuries, with the England star sidelined for the second half of the campaign.

The 28-year-old United left-back managed only 15 appearances across all competitions last season, with Shaw only making 12 Premier League starts.

Shaw was ruled out of action back in February after the England international came off before half-time in the 2-1 win against Luton Town at Kenilworth Road.

Despite his injuries at Old Trafford last season, the United full-back was named in England’s Euro 2024 squad in Germany this summer.

Shaw linked up with his England teammates and the Three Lions international was an unused substitute in his side’s 1-0 win over Serbia at Euro 2024 on Sunday.

Gareth Southgate has previously stressed the importance of Shaw for England, with the United defender being the Three Lions’ only specialist left-back in the squad.

Man Utd star Shaw names his best XI

Speaking to OneFootball, Luke Shaw revealed his all-time best XI of players he played alongside in his club career and on the international stage with England.

Manchester United legend David de Gea took his place between the sticks and Shaw named a defensive partnership of John Stones and Raphael Varane.

Shaw opted to put himself at left-back while Manchester City star Kyle Walker took his place out on the opposite flank.

Ahead of the four-man backline is the midfield trio of United legend Michael Carrick alongside Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard and Chelsea hero Frank Lampard.

Shaw’s front three consisted of three former United players, with club legends Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney out on the left and right wings respectively.

Former United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic leads the frontline as the sole striker, with Shaw admitting that he was “happy” with his final selection.

But Shaw’s team included two noticeable absences, with influential United stars Bruno Fernandes and Lisandro Martinez failing to make the XI.

Why Shaw didn’t play against Serbia

Gareth Southgate, who was previously linked with United, admitted that he took a risk with his decision to include Shaw in his final 26-man squad for Euro 2024.

Shaw has been a key player for Southgate and made his mark at the last European Championship tournament, with the United star scoring in the final of Euro 2020.

However, Southgate admitted ahead of the Group C clash against Serbia that he would have to make a late call on whether or not to play Shaw in the match.

“Everyone is available,” he said.

“We have a decision whether Luke [Shaw] is possible to use from the bench or not. But everybody has trained today and is available.”
