'He was outstanding': Alan Shearer picks out Arsenal star when asked who impressed him most in Euro 2024 game

Alan Shearer has issued his verdict on the performance of Bukayo Saka after the Arsenal star helped England open their Euro 2024 campaign with a win over Serbia.

The Three Lions have already put one foot in the knockout stages of the competition, with Jude Bellingham scoring the only goal in their opening game.

It was certainly not a particularly impressive display for England, and their fans will be hoping to see the side improve as the tournament goes on, with this being the time they surely need to get across the line if they are going to win a major tournament with this current crop.

It was Bukayo Saka who provided the assist for Bellingham, with the Arsenal star’s cross being deflected into the Real Madrid man’s path on the edge of the six-yard box.

England supporters will not remember the game particularly fondly, but there were still some standout performances, with Alan Shearer asked by Micah Richards on The Rest is Football who impressed him most during the game.

“I was impressed with Saka, in the first-half, was brilliant. I thought he was outstanding. Bellingham, I thought, was fantastic. Marc Guehi was superb, he defended really well in the first-half, and then him and Stones got better in the second-half as well,” he said.

Arsenal star will have his moment at Euro 2024

Saka’s time to shine will surely come in the tournament. There was a feeling that Saka did not have the best season by his own standards for Arsenal this past season, and yet, he still managed to score 16 goals and contributed nine assists in the Premier League.

He has now been directly involved in more than 100 goals for Arsenal during his career, and he is into double figures for goals for his country.

This tournament is going to be about peaking at the right time, particularly when you consider Argentina lost their opening game at the most recent World Cup to Saudi Arabia.

And it would not be a surprise to see Saka play a prominent role for as long as England are in Germany.
