Liverpool hoping to sign £65m Premier League player who’s been a ‘standout performer’ at Euro 2024

Liverpool fans would be wise to keep a close watch on Euro 2024 over the next month.

The tournament kicked off on Friday, and several Reds players have already been in action in Germany.

There was bad news for Andy Robertson and Dominik Szoboszlai, who both suffered defeat, while Trent Alexander-Arnold has sparked much debate with his midfield display for England.

It isn’t just the 10 members of the Liverpool squad who supporters should have their eyes on as the competition heats up, though.

This being transfer season, the Reds have been linked with a whole host of players also featuring for their country’s. We could be watching some future Liverpool stars.

Liverpool in the race to sign Marc Guehi

With Liverpool reportedly in the market for a new centre-back, there are some obvious names for fans to assess.

Waldemar Anton has been linked, although the German looks set to play a back-up role for the hosts. Meanwhile, Italy’s Riccardo Calafiori is one we’d love Liverpool to take a closer look at.

One who has slightly more tangible rumours around a move to Anfield is England’s very own Marc Guehi.

After injury to Harry Maguire, Guehi has become Gareth Southgate’s first-choice partner for John Stones in the England backline.

The Crystal Palace man was excellent during Sunday’s 1-0 win over Serbia, leading to former Three Lions’ players Joe Hart and Matthew Upson calling him a ‘standout performer’ on BBC 5 Live.

And it seems that Liverpool’s interest in the 23-year-old has already been piqued.

The Daily Mail claim that the Reds are one of the sides ‘closely monitoring’ Guehi for a summer move. The centre-back is reportedly fully focused on Euro 2024 for now but has just two years left on his deal at Selhurst Park.

As a result, Palace reportedly face a ‘major battle’ to keep Guehi. Nevertheless, Oliver Glasner’s team are said to be ready to offer the former Chelsea man fresh terms in order to keep him and will place an asking-price of £65m on Guehi in an attempt to scare of the likes of Liverpool.

Manchester United and Tottenham are two more teams claimed to be taking a liking to the defender.

Would Guehi be a good signing for Liverpool?

There is certainly plenty to like about Guehi. From a Liverpool point of view, he does tick an awful lot of boxes for FSG.

As we’ve seen plenty of times in the past, the Liverpool owners do like to sign players in the 22 to 25 age bracket. At 23, Guehi fits nicely into that.

He’s also Premier League proven, with three seasons worth of experience in the division under his belt, along with two full years in the Championship.

At £65m, Guehi would perhaps be a fair bit more expensive than Liverpool would prefer. But there would perhaps be reasonable hope that they could knock Palace down on this.

The one small bugbear that we have with Guehi is that he is not the tallest. At just six feet tall, he would be dwarfed by the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate. But that doesn’t necessarily have to be a problem.

As he makes strides in the tournament with England, Guehi is certainly one to bear in mind.
