N.J. school districts call for early dismissals due to heat (Tuesday, June 18, 2024)

Scorching temperatures have prompted some New Jersey school districts to call for early dismissals on Tuesday and for the rest of the week with a heat wave in the forecast.

Temperatures are expected to climb into the low 90s on Tuesday and getting increasingly warm through the week.

A heat index of more than 100 degrees is possible and record high temperatures could fall.

A heat advisory is in effect for most of the state Tuesday and Wednesday with excessive heat watches set to kick in on Thursday for much of New Jersey.

Many school districts already had early dismissals scheduled for the final days of the school year. Some districts also have no school on Wednesday in observance of the Juneteenth federal holiday.

The following school districts have announced early dismissals.

  • Perth Amboy (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday)
  • Bridgewater-Raritan (Tuesday)
  • Old Bridge (Wednesday, Thursday)
  • East Orange (Tuesday, Thursday and Friday)
  • Camden (Tuesday, Thursday and Friday)
  • Edison (Tuesday)
  • Elizabeth (Wednesday and Thursday)
