'Never as strong': Benjamin Siegrist compares Celtic vs Rangers to big Premier League derbies

Benjamin Siegrist’s time at Celtic looks like it is coming to an end soon.

We discussed this morning how the former Swiss U21 international said he is looking to leave the club this summer after his 2022 move from Dundee United draws to its close.

In what has been a bizarre time for Siegrist at Celtic, he arrived at the club hoping to compete with Joe Hart for that number one spot. And, to be fair to him, there was hope that he could.

Siegrist was one of the best goalkeepers in the league during his time at Tannadice and at just 30 years of age when he joined, he was entering the prime years of his career.

But now, it seems his time in Paradise could well be over but the Swiss ‘keeper has taken the time to talk up the Celtic fans before his potential Parkhead exit.

Siegrist says Celtic ‘rivalry’ with Rangers tops EPL derbies

Despite making just two first-team appearances in his time at Celtic, Siegrist is well aware of the rivalry that exists between the Celtic and Rangers fans and insists that he Glasgow Derby is better than anything the Premier League has.

Siegrist said [Blick], “This is a real football country! Many people live for that weekend moment in the stadium.

“And if their team wins, they feel good all week.

“More than in England. Of course, there is the North London Derby or the Merseyside Derby. But the rivalry is never as strong as here.”

This kind of talk isnt’t new. The Celtic vs Rangers fixture is continually compared to the big fictures down south when, in truth, the tribal rivalry up here far outstrips anything that the EPL has to offer.

Now I am not for one second suggesting that the richest league in the world doesn’t have some good fixtures with intense rivalry.

Of course not. But when it comes to the big game up here, nothing comes close to generating the same atmosphere a packed Parkhead does whenever Rangers come calling.
