‘Coming in Barcelona’: Ferrari delivering ‘big’ update to one area of their car at the Spanish GP – journalist

Ferrari will want to move on as quickly as possible from the Canadian Grand Prix after their worst race of the season.

After narrowing the gap to Red Bull following their double podium in Monaco, they had a disastrous weekend in Montreal.

Journalist Matthew Somerfield was speaking on the Missed Apex Podcast about what Ferrari have lined up for the Spanish Grand Prix.

Charles Leclerc is still the closest rival to Max Verstappen in the Drivers’ Championship despite failing to score a point in Canada.

The triple-header of races coming up in Spain, Austria and Great Britain typically suit Red Bull which could make the Monegasque’s chances of securing a second victory of the season difficult.

However, he and Carlos Sainz are set to benefit to a big update to the floor of their Ferraris at the Spanish Grand Prix.

They’ll hope it just gives them the edge over the rivals who are taking impressive steps forward at every race.

Ferrari delivering ‘big’ update to their floor at the Spanish Grand Prix

Formula 1 teams only have 18 months left to hone their current cars before they have to work towards a completely new ruleset.

That means that eventually, a time will come when updates stop being delivered for the current generation of cars and focus will turn to 2026.

If Red Bull had extended their lead at the front of the pack over the winter, some manufacturers might have already made that decision.

However, Max Verstappen and particularly Sergio Perez are in sight and that’s given Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes enough impetus to continue trying to chase the Austrian team down.

McLaren have proved over the past year that they understand exactly how to develop their car and Lando Norris earning the first win of his career in Miami proved they’re a force to be reckoned with.

Mercedes have struggled over the past two seasons but in Canada finally showed that they have the potential to be frontrunners this year.

However, Ferrari are currently the closest rival to Red Bull and a big upgrade to their floor could make all the difference.

Ferrari ready to take next step forward in Spain

Talking about how Ferrari haven’t had the same big spike as a team like McLaren, Matthew Somerfield said: “Yeah that’s probably because it will be coming in Barcelona.

“I think they’ll have a big floor update in Barcelona. But we have to remember, Barcelona used to be the fifth race in the calendar and now it’s the ninth [10] so everything has changed from a transport and logistics point of view.

“More of the front end of the calendar are flyaways which means you do have a problem with having big update packages arrive because teams are less likely to want to put something on the car, fly halfway across the world for it to then fail and not produce the performance they were looking for.”

Ferrari will hope their floor update with make all the difference in Spain after both cars failed to reach Q3 in Montreal.

There could also be a big announcement for Carlos Sainz during the race weekend.

He might finally have decided where he’s going to be racing next season.
