Caoimhin Kelleher's price tag and what that could mean for Celtic - opinion

Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has been frequently mentioned as a Celtic transfer target in years gone by.

The Liverpool number two has once again been linked to the Bhoys this summer as they search for a Joe Hart replacement, with reports from elsewhere claiming he could be tempted to complete a Parkhead move.

Kelleher is now 25 years of age and will be keen to establish himself as a preferred choice between the sticks sooner rather than later.

In 2023/24, the Cork-born man featured 26 times for his club across all competitions, keeping five clean sheets in the process [Transfermarkt].

Now, more information has emerged about the price he could be available for if he is to depart Anfield this summer.

According to The Athletic, Liverpool are unwilling to sanction any Kelleher sale under the figure of £25 million despite his wish to become a number one.

The outlet claim the reason for this is that he is among the best secondary goalkeepers in the world, and it would be hard for Arne Slot to find a comparable replacement.

Conceivably, this would price Celtic out of any potential swoop for the Irishman. Simply put, the reigning Scottish Premiership champions don’t spend that type of money in the market.

Brendan Rodgers will be keen to bolster the ranks at Parkhead; however, he is likely to look in an alternative direction if that is the going rate for a new goalkeeper, albeit a fantastic one in Kelleher.

Newcastle United’s Martin Dubravka and Sparta Prague stopper Peter Vindahl Jensen are likelier targets, while both also fit the profile of a robust presence to succeed Hart.

Celtic won’t be paying £25 million for anyone this summer; they aren’t going to start now. Over the next few weeks, hopefully, supporters can find out the answer regarding who will take the reigns in the goalmouth.
