Hungary no longer opposed to Rutte’s NATO chief bid

Mark Rutte and Viktor Orban

The Hungarian leader stated that it was crucial for him that the next NATO Secretary-General honors his agreement with the current Secretary-General, Jens Stoltenberg. According to Orban, they had agreed that Hungary would not participate in NATO’s activities in Ukraine and that Hungarian funds would not be used to support the country.

Orban mentioned that during a meeting in Brussels, Rutte promised to uphold the agreement if he were to succeed Stoltenberg.

“In light of his promise, Hungary is ready to support Prime Minister Rutte’s candidacy for NATO Secretary-General,” Orban wrote in a Twitter post.

He that Rutte assured him that his goal as NATO Secretary-General would be “to treat all Alliance members with the same level of understanding and respect.”

Earlier on June 18, the Financial Times reported that Rutte promised Orban that during his tenure, Hungary would have the right to avoid participating in NATO programs supporting Ukraine, which occur outside the territories of NATO members.
