Campaign expert says Biden should give up on these Trump voters: ‘Fool’s errand’

As Democrats wonder how non-MAGA Republicans — like Nikki Haley supporters — could vote for Donald Trump, former campaign consultant Matthew Dowd has advice for the Biden campaign:

Treat GOP voters as lepers.

Isolate them and try to keep their numbers from growing, but don’t engage. It’s not worth the energy or money, Dowd preaches, citing a new poll.

“In latest NPR/Marist poll, Trump is getting 93% to 5% for Biden among GOP voters,” Dowd tweeted on Tuesday. “In 2020, Trump won GOP 94% to 6%. In 2016, Trump won GOP 90% to 7%.”

Dowd pointed out that despite his criminal conviction, attacks on the rule of law, his orchestration of the overturning of reproductive rights, Trump is doing better among GOP voters than presidential nominees Mitt Romney in 2012, John McCain in 2008, George W. Bush in 2000 and 2004, and Ronald Reagan in 1980 and ‘84.

“Appealing to GOP voters is fool’s errand for Biden,” Dowd tweeted.

An NPR/PBS News/Marist Poll taken between June 10-12, revealed that President Joe Biden leads Trump in a head-to-head race among independents on 50% of respondents to 48%, with 2% undecided.

In that poll, Trump saw the largest drop in support among independent women, whose backing fell from 50% in May to 42% in June. His support among independent men also fell from 56% to 51%.
