Leeds United wanted £18m Premier League player last summer, now they should try and sign him again - opinion

Leeds United could find themselves in a similar situation last summer when it comes to signing new players.

The Whites tried and failed to sign a number of players a year ago as a result of interest from Premier League clubs, and it could be the same again.

One example early on is their interest in re-signing former loanee Joe Rodon, with the Whites likely to do everything they can to ensure he returns to Elland Road.

However, all three of the newly promoted sides have been linked with trying to pip Leeds to his signature, and without Premier League money, it could be difficult.

Unlike last summer, hopefully some players can instead see the bigger picture and use Leeds as their springboard to Premier League football via a promotion push, rather than jumping straight there.

Leeds wanted Cameron Archer last summer and now they should move again

Instant examples that spring to mind from last summer are Leeds’ failed pursuits of Cameron Archer, Gustavo Hamer and Luke Thomas.

All three instead opted for a move to Sheffield United, who ended up being relegated with a whimper and are now starting next season on minus two points.

What’s more, Thomas was sent back to Leicester City in January, while Archer’s move to the Blades included an automatic obligation to buyback for Aston Villa upon relegation.

The Blades paid around £18 million to sign Archer 10 months ago but just four goals in 30 appearances later, it is highly unlikely he will command that sort of fee again.

Instead, it will be interesting to see if Villa are willing to sanction another loan deal after his failure to prove himself in the Premier League, and if they are, Leeds need to be all over it.

Archer was prolific in both of his two previous loan spells in the Championship at Middlesbrough and Preston North End. A proper proven out-and-out number nine is something Leeds are craving.

At this level, there would be no one better to bring in but it may be a case of being patient to see what Villa’s plans are for him this summer.

Leeds planning overhaul of striker options

Once again, Leeds had a problem in that number nine position last season with Patrick Bamford only managing to start 15 league matches due to a combination of form and fitness issues.

Leeds are reportedly open to selling Bamford this summer with transfer insider Graeme Bailey suggesting an overhaul of the striking options could be on the cards.

Joel Piroe proved time and time again he does not fit the system as a lone number nine and it will be interesting to see how Daniel Farke uses him next term.

Alongside the signing of someone like Archer, Mateo Joseph also deserves a more prominent role and has been working hard in the off-season to hit the ground running.
